The IT Super Heroes!
When my children ask me about my job I struggle giving a good answer. I am neither a policeman, a fireman or a doctor. Which they can reflect to. How do you explain IT as a profession? IT supports the business. IT helps the business. I help our end users. Dad to the rescue! Like Superman, Ironman or Batman. They don’t really buy into it...
But they should. IT does add value to your company. But exactly how does IT support your business?
Let’s look at what we so imaginative have named the IT Strategy. And let’s start with typically questions like; Do you have an IT strategy? Does the IT strategy support your business? Does IT have a crisp and clear plan with what they do? Is IT in a position to take the right decisions? Well, let’s see.
First of all, the IT Strategy is not the same as the Business Strategy. You need them both. The IT Strategy is not something you leave out. The IT Strategy sets the directions for the technology management within your company. This is the overall plan with objectives and principles to follow. Still vital that the IT Strategy supports the business priorities within your company.
Defining the IT Strategy requires deep understanding of the business and close collaboration with multiple user groups within your organization. They all play an important role in shaping the IT Strategy.
- The Business Strategy defines the strategic objectives for your company. Customer satisfaction, revenue growth and cost reduction would typically belong here.
- The IT Strategy defines how IT will support your business. How can IT support and achieve operational excellence? The IT Strategy should be a comprehensive plan with IT approaches and principles fully supporting business goals.
So what exactly is the IT Strategy? It should give directions within a numerous of areas. And it should say something about the desired future, and how to get there. Some areas you certainly should consider are:
- IT Principles (e.g. buy before build, all services cloud ready, …)
- IT Governance (e.g. efficient decisions processes, meeting arenas, …)
- Financials (e.g. transparent and competitive price models, …)
- Metrics (e.g. key performance indexes, automated reporting, …)
- IT Services (e.g. standardized service catalogue, …)
- Enterprise Architecture (e.g. architecture requirements and guidelines within master data, applications, integrations and infrastructure, …)
- People (e.g. recruit for talents, internal skills, performance management, …)
- Vendors (e.g. partner strategy, contract management, …)
Having a clear IT Strategy supporting standardized solutions and best practice processes will result in better services, faster implementation and cheaper cost.
